Reddit's initiative addresses declining referral traffic from traditional social platforms, with promising results from early tests.
Reddit's expansion of business tools includes Dynamic Product Ads and a mobile app for its Pro suite.
Reddit is rolling out Reddit Pro for Publishers, a new suite of free tools designed to help media outlets drive traffic and track content as referral sources from other social platforms dry up, according to a company announcement. The toolkit gives publishers analytics, RSS feed integration, and AI-powered recommendations to connect with Reddit's 110 million daily active users.
Opening the toolbox: The new tools, which live in a dedicated “Links” tab, are broken down into three main features. Publishers get an insights dashboard to track story performance, an auto-import tool for RSS feeds, and an AI engine that suggests the best communities for their content.
An answer to cratering clicks: The initiative is Reddit's direct response to the traffic problem plaguing many online publishers. After alpha testing with outlets like The Atlantic and NBC News, the results seem promising. "The platform has also become our top social referral traffic source," said Sarakshi Rai, Deputy Managing Editor at The Hill.
No exit necessary: To keep engagement high, Reddit is also testing an improved in-app article reader. The feature keeps users inside the Reddit app, letting them simply swipe up from a news story to land directly in the comment thread for that post.
As traditional social media gatekeepers become less reliable for news distribution, Reddit is positioning itself not just as a traffic source, but as an essential part of a publisher's core audience strategy.
Reddit's push to court publishers is part of a broader expansion of its business tools. The company recently rolled out Dynamic Product Ads for e-commerce, launched a mobile application for its Reddit Pro suite, and developed Custom Audience API capabilities to enhance its ad-targeting features.
